An RV Caravan Is A Great Way To Try The RV Lifestyle

What is an RV Caravan Tour?

An RV Caravan Tour is an organized trip or vacation in which several RVers travel together in their rigs with a tour guide according to a pre-set agenda.

The tour is usually for at least a week, but I have seen tours as long as 75 days. Often the tour is centered around exploring certain areas or centered around particular activities such as birdwatching.

Why is an RV caravan tour a good way to go?

An RV caravan is great for novice RVers trying to determine if full-timing is a lifestyle they can live with.

Because caravans include an experienced RV guide, mostly experienced travelers, reserved campsites, and an established itinerary you can concentrate on the RV experience and the sites being visited.

You can be secure in the knowledge that your guide and fellow caravaners will help you with campsite set-up and hook-ups. They will give you friendly advice and help all along the way. You will get to feel how RVers work as a community.

Another flexible aspect of a caravan is that you can use your own RV if you have one, borrow one, or rent one. Some caravan tour companies have affiliations with RV rental companies and you may be able to get a discounted rental for a caravan tour.

Even though we are already on the road as full-time RVers, we are going to check out caravan options. I can't think of a better way to get comfortable with a new RV than to be surrounded by experienced folks that will be with you for several days. I have read several times that caravaners have even become lifetime friends.

Are There Any Downsides To A Caravan?

There are a few downsides to a caravan. Although there are several caravan tour companies, many of them concentrate on the same areas. So the variety of tours is somewhat limited.

Also, because caravan tours usually consist of fairly small groups they often fill up quickly and a spot must be reserved several months and maybe even a year in advance. With regard to schedules, there are few tours per year relative to other vacation options. Therefore, it may be difficult to find one that will fit your schedule.

Another thing to be wary of is what is included in the caravan tour package. The tours are mostly all-inclusive and most companies are very clear about what is and is not included. However, some tours are priced ala carte and you should be careful when budgeting for your trip.
