Hi! We are Howard & Linda Payne and if you are trying to learn a little bit about us, you have come to the right place.
We are both from Louisville, Kentucky. Linda was born and raised there and Howard (that would be me) was raised there. We are less than five months apart in age and we both turned 42 in 2005, the year we began full-time RVing.
I have a law degree from the University of Louisville, a BS degree in Accounting and a minor in Information Systems from Western Kentucky University.
Linda has a BS degree in Interior Design and a minor in Architectural Drafting from Western Kentucky University.
Like most people, we were taught that you go to school, get a job, buy a house, and keep trying to increase your income until you can finally retire. Neither of us came from wealthy families. Linda was from a typical middle income family and I was from a low income family though we never wanted for anything thanks to the work ethic of my parents.
The one thing we did not do that most others do is have children. That was a choice we made that we have never regretted.
Through ups and downs, we managed to remain close and happy and tended to live for the moment. Well Linda did - I was always pointing toward early retirement and having $1 Million in the bank to live off the rest of our lives. However, my plan was going to be tough because of youthful indiscretions with money and the immediate gratification trap most of society falls into.
Fortunately, we took advantage of our opportunities in life, worked our way out of debt, and were living pretty comfortably. By the way, being debt free is one of the most freeing feelings you can ever have. We highly recommend everyone put themselves on a track to be debt free before full-time RVing becomes a serious thought.
I don't want to bore you with too much detail about our past, so let's bring you up to speed. The best way to do that is to send you to the page that explains How We Decided To Follow Our RV-Dreams.
After that, all you could ever want to know about us is explained in our Journal pages that we started on January 1, 2005. From January 1, 2005 to August 2, 2005, we detailed everything that we went through in preparing to full-time. You can find these Journal entries on our RV-Dreams Journal page (about half way down).
You can click on this link to see the details of Our Home On Wheels. Because I was a state manager for my company, I gave 6 months notice so that they could find a suitable replacement and so we could sell our house. The house sold quickly and we ended up having to move into our RV three months before actually going on the road.
On August 3, 2005, we began our full-time RVing adventure and we have been documenting our activities daily since then. We did change the format of the Journal at that point so it will have a different look than the entries prior to 8/3/05, but you can click on this link to get to it from here: RV-Dreams Journal.
We know that's an awful lot of reading to just find out who we are, but who we are is not really as important to this website as how we got where we are. The Journals provide additional information that just can't be detailed in the main website and there are funny anecdotes, details of our mistakes, and stories of what we did to prepare to leave our traditional lifestyle for life on the road.
Our lives are an open book. But it's all because we want to put you in our shoes and let you share our experiences in a way that makes them more real and, hopefully, more meaningful.
Take care, enjoy, and thank you for your support!
Howard & Linda
